A narrative-based evaluation charting and discussing the impact and issues involved in brazilian-based AfroReggae’s project work in the UK with young people at risk in the inner city in London and Manchester in 2006. “What can we learn from AfroReggae for our own development of effective practice in creative and cultural work with young people at risk?” it assesses the project delivery, impact on participants and developing practice.
Aims:
To transfer knowledge and skills from AfroReggae to artists and arts organisations in the UK.
To explore ways which young people can use the arts as an effective means to change their world.
To present UK audiences with great contemporary art and arts practices from Brazil.
Project description
Between 2006-2008 the AfroReggae UK Partnership established 10 groupsin East London and Manchester working with young people living in communities affected by the issues underlying the growth of gang related street violence. These young people continue to be empowered to take control of their lives through creative practice and engagement.
2006: Performances of From the Favela to the World at Barbican, Oxford Town Hall and Contact Manchester; Insight AfroReggae, a three week programme for fifty arts practitioners; formation AfroReggae UK Partnership; Youth and Police Seminar
2007: Performances of From the Favela to the World at Barbican; Training Forum for teachers, youth leaders, etc; public seminars on the empowerment of young people through the arts.
