Summary of evaluation
An independent evaluation of a pilot for a new skills development course for young women in custody delivered by Clean Break in April 2010.
The evaluation report identified that the project convincingly demonstrated the value of drama exercises, creative education and the use of role play in teaching personal skills, increasing confidence and self esteem and enabling young women to consider their role in society, including looking at their offending behaviour as well as determining their own strengths and weaknesses.
Project description
A drama project for young women at the Josephine Butler Unit (JBU) at HMP Downview in April 2010, where Clean Break worked with nine young female offenders for ten days. The propgramme's aims were to develop:
- Positive engagement
- Confidence and self-esteem
- Desisting from re-offending
- Addressing risk factors
- Developing protective factors
- Reducing the likelihood of self-harm/harming others
- Life skills
- Engagement in education, training or employment
- Positive aspirations.
